Narrator and production consultant Sean Eversley Bradwell was recently interviewed by the Ithaca College news service's Dan Verderosa about Civil Warriors. Eversley Bradwell, who is is the director of IC’s Center for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Social Change (IDEAS), reflected on the process, noting that '“People talk about a labor of love; this was a labor of commitment ... [c]ommitment to the community in telling this story. I’m very impressed with the resilience and long-term dedication to making sure that this story gets told.”'

We held an invite-only celebration event to mark the occasion at the The Cherry Artspace, with performances by the The Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers and the Honey Child Soul Quintet!

Serendipity Catering & Bar did a wonderful job catering the night, with special thanks to Sheldrake Point Winery and Liquid State Brewing Company donating libations for the event!

Ithaca College Screening

We had a good turnout for the Civil Warriors (CW) screening on November 1, 2018! Discussion section speakers included CW narrator and IC professor Sean Eversley Bradwell, Photosynthesis Productions president & CW Producer Deborah C. Hoard, and CW Cinematographer David Huntley.

Our screening was sponsored by student publication and campus organization EMBRACE, a new outlet for highlighting student narratives with a focus on underrepresented communities.

Our thanks go out to EMBRACE co-founder Eden Strachan, the marvelous and mighty Mickie Quinn, and everyone else who helped publicize and organize this event, as well as those who have donated their time and energy along this journey!

CIVIL WARRIORS SCREENING

The theme for Black History Month 2018 is "African Americans in Times of War".

In keeping with that theme, and as part of a joint collaboration between the History Center in Tompkins County, Historic Ithaca, and Southside Community Center, and in conjunction with ITHACA LOVES TEACHERS-WINTER RECESS (Teacher Appreciation Week), CIVIL WARRIORS will be shown at the Southside Community Community Center on Saturday, Feb. 24th, at 6-8pm.

Capital City Black Film Festival 2017!

CIVIL WARRIORS has been selected to screen at the Capital City Black Film Festival in Austin, TX.

Director/Co-Producer Che Broadnax is slated to attend, while the rest of us look forward to reading the dispatches from the festival floor, looking at pics on Twitter and Instagram, and hopefully discovering some new works to love!

Milestone for new Smithsonian African American History & Culture Museum

In just 4 months of operation, the new museum has had over 1 million visitors! (via The Grio)

Deborah actually had a chance to go visit the museum back in November, as part of a Cornell-affiliated trip to D.C., and took some lovely shots of exhibits on view. This one in particular stood out:

In case you didn't know, this is a representation of the famous image from the 1968 Olympics, in which athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos silently raised black-gloved fists in the "Black Power" salute while the American National Anthem played during their medal ceremony for the 200-meter running event.

The power of this gesture and its effect in the public eye at the time cannot be overstated, laden as it was with potent symbolism and acknowledgements of some of the many marginalized communities in the United States. Naturally, the reactions were vociferous and widespread, and the effects on their lives both personal and professional were of real consequence.

Winner - Best Narrative Feature - Drama at Long Beach Indie Festival 2016!

CIVIL WARRIORS took home one of the top prizes at this year's Long Beach Indie Film Festival! Check out the slate of nominees and competition we faced! Co-Producer-Director Che Broadnax was on hand to attend the festival and Awards Gala, looking sharp per usual:

We're extremely proud of this award and recognition, especially after the long journey and loving labor it took to bring the project to fruition.

This is really only the beginning, though. Along with the film itself, there is an entire teaching curriculum and social mission sewn right into the project as a whole. We look forward to future screenings, as well as getting the overall message of the film into classrooms and conversations!
